A Guide for Looking After Your Family’s Mental Health

Supporting each other as a family is very important, and especially as a parent supporting and raising their child. Here is a guide to ensuring that your family’s mental health is never neglected and that a happy home environment is always prioritized.

Check in With Them

When reaching a certain age, children will want more of their privacy and independency, but that doesn’t mean leave them to their own devices without checking in with them. Ask them how they’re doing and how they’re feeling, without being too pushy. Showing your support and that you’re there for them will make it easier for your child to approach you with any problems when they feel ready to talk.

Encourage Family Mealtimes

Not only are family mealtimes essential for positive bonding and time spent together, they’re also important for allowing opportunity for you to notice anything going on with your child. Their behaviour at mealtimes could indicate further problems, such as if they’re suddenly unwilling to join the family to eat, they are failing to eat what’s put in front of them, or if their mood is negative and unresponsive.

For indications of mental health concerns which may be affecting your child’s ability to have a healthy diet or healthy relationship with food, there is support out there like Eden Treatment in order to get back on the right path.

Watch for Any Changes in Their Behaviour

Changes in behaviour which can signify mental health issues include:

  • Becoming withdrawn

  • Sleeping more or sleeping less

  • Mood swings

  • Irritability or being quick to anger

  • Change in eating habits

  • Becoming secretive

  • Physical changes, such as weight loss

If changes in behaviour occur, don’t ignore them, and broach the subject in a sensitive way with your child.

Don’t Be Quick to Judge

As children grow, and especially during teenage years, it can be easy to react quickly as a parent to negative behaviour, such as becoming annoyed that your child has become messy, lazy or doesn’t help with the housework. While it’s natural to want to chastise your child for this, be more patient with understanding the reasoning, as some mental health conditions like depression can result in lack of personal routine, lack of motivation when it comes to housework and general bad habits.

You don’t want to reprimand your child before understanding why they might be suffering with bad habits.

Final Thoughts

Mental health problems can arise in any family, at any time, no matter the age of your child. It’s important to pay attention to any changes in behaviour or signs of mental health issues so that proper support and help can be provided. While pressurized years, such as teenager years, can result in changes in behaviour which are natural, be sure as a parent to keep an eye on the situation and educate yourself further regarding signs and symptoms of mental health in your family.

Finally, having a child who is suffering through a mental health condition can have a profound effect on yours, too. You may end up feeling very low and troubled by watching a child struggle, so be sure to also pay attention to your own mental health and seek the right help and support you need, too.

How To Improve Balance as a Horseback Rider

Good balance is important for horseback riding. You’ll need balance skills to keep your seat when your mount changes gaits or spooks at scary objects so improving your balance skills is a good way to make you a better equestrian. Here are three simple exercises you can do to improve your balance on horseback.

Ride Around Obstacles

If you are already confident keeping your balance when your horse transitions between gaits, try creating an obstacle course to ride through so you are forced to balance while your mount maneuvers around different objects. Learning how to shift your weight when your horse turns or moves over uneven ground can help your balance. It may also help to set up jump poles so you can learn to shift your weight appropriately as your horse lifts off the ground to jump.

Try Riding Without Stirrups

As a beginner rider, you are taught to use the stirrups for balance and always keep your heels down form proper riding form. If you are an experienced rider and want to improve your balance, you can forego that initial teaching and practice riding without stirrups. This forces your core to engage with your balance and strengthens muscles that don’t get a workout when you use stirrups. However, it is important to remember that this practice can be dangerous if you aren’t prepared for it so make sure you start slow. Practice walking until you are completely comfortable riding without stirrups before moving on to faster paces.

Practice Yoga

Not every exercise to improve riding balance has to be done on horseback. Yoga is a popular form of exercise that has been proven to improve balance and flexibility. This type of workout pushes you to balance while posing in different ways. You’ll also have to balance while transitioning between poses. Each pose is intended to work and strengthen various muscles so focusing on poses that benefit your legs and core can help you improve your riding balance.

There is always room for improvement when it comes to balance as a horseback rider. If you want to become a better equestrian, make sure you have exceptional balance so you can communicate with your mount more clearly and keep your seat even when your horse spooks unexpectedly. These three exercises are great ways to enhance your balance. You can easily incorporate them into your daily lifestyle so you can become an exceptional horseback rider regardless of your chosen discipline.

Structure for Pre-Schoolers

The first few years of your children’s lives are magical. They’re learning and growing so much, developing their personalities, and discovering fun and play. At the same time, small kids can be very challenging for parents. It can be frustrating to balance work and home life, keep your young ones engaged, and know where to encourage independence and where to set boundaries. Check out these tips to help, but the first is this: Relax. The very fact that you’re involved enough to be concerned about your child’s growth is a sign that you’re a caring parent.

Daycare

Let’s start by getting realistic. While the prospect of taking your kids to daycare Tampa FL makes some parents feel guilty, the pros outweigh the cons for working families. You need to work to make money and support your children's lifestyle.

Also, remember that you’re not simply “dumping” them somewhere for eight to 10 hours a day. All reputable child care centers undergo rigorous certification programs and have structured schedules that benefit children as they move into elementary school, while still giving them fun social interaction!

Outdoor Activities

It’s amazing how much of an impact the simple act of going outdoors to a park or playground can have. Think of all the ground you can cover in a short period of time and how much you can do, not to mention the benefits of sunlight and fresh air.

Children’s Museums and Science Centers

For a more educational outing, check out the local children’s museum or science center. These are great places for children of almost all ages to have fun and learn through interactive activities and displays for everything from weather and environmental experiments to lessons about animals and space travel.

Children love to experience new things, and they respond well to structure. Make plans provide activities and be present for them, and it will pay off as they become lifelong learners!
