Old Farmer's Almanac

I know I shouldn't start worrying about winter yet. It is a little cloudy out right now, and sprinkling a little, but it is pretty warm out. The past week it has been in the 60's. That's great for being November. But I can't help thinking about the up coming winter.

Last winter here in New Hampshire, we had a record breaking winter. We had the most snow that we have had in over 100 years! We got over 102 inches of snow! I really hope we don't get that again this winter. So I decided to check the Old Farmer's Almanac for their predictions. I love looking at the Old Farmer's Almanac and usually get a copy of it for my husband for Christmas.

So their predictions for my part of the country is that winter will be colder than usual. Yuck. And precipitation will be near or slightly above normal, with below-normal snowfall in the north and above-normal snowfall in the south. Great I'm in the south of my state so I guess we could get a lot of snow! I don't mean to complain, but winter is my least favorite season! Looks like I might need to get out those tire chains soon.

More Snow In New Hampshire

As of yesterday, we were at 102.2" of snowfall in the State of New Hampshire. That had us in 2nd place for highest snowfall in a winter season since 1900 and only the third time we've reached 100" since 1900! We probably will beat the record by the end of the season for the most snow in our state.

We sure have had a lot of snow this winter! My son is stuck in the house with a cold, so he didn't really go out in the snow today. But my daughter, husband and I did. They built a snow man, built a snow fort, and dug a "chair" in the snow, and dug a hole to climb in! Then came in for some hot chocolate.

My daughter loves playing in the snow. It's great fun for kids, but I sure have had enough of it. But it does look pretty, here's a picture of the trees in my back yard.

Baby It's Cold Outside

It's cold here in New Hampshire! It's about 22 degrees out today and windy. I thought I'd take a picture of my flag blowing around. I don't like when it's cold and windy, but I love the looks of a flag blowing around in the wind!

This has been the snowiest winter around here in a long time. And we are expected to get more snow tonight! Up to 8 inches more! I've personally had it. I'm ready for spring.

I had put up a poll on "What is your favorite winter activity," and the most votes was "None, I don't like winter." I'm beginning to agree with that. Enough is Enough!

I thought I'd put up this song, "Baby it's cold outside," just for a few days. This weather made me think of it. I know it's kind of corny, but I always liked it. I guess I'm a corny type of person.

Well that's the weather, from here in New Hampshire. Hope everyone stays warm.

Sledding, Sledding & More Sledding

Being the penny pinching Mom that I am (some call it cheap, I call it frugal) one of our weekend activities is Sledding!

We go almost every Saturday or Sunday, sometime both. For me that's saying something, because I am not the biggest fan of winter. But this year I have really tried to embrace the outdoor aspect of it.

You might think it's because I'm trying to get the family outdoors, get some fresh air, and get some excersise. But to tell the truth the real reason is because it's free! Instead of paying lots of money to go to the movies, bowling, or go to an arcade or some place like that. We go Sledding!

Don't get me wrong I like the movies, I kind of like arcades, and I like bowling. And those are all great activities to do once in awhile, but not when you're on a really tight budget.

Besides even if I'm not 100% thrilled with standing in the cold, wind, and snow, the kids love it! So I'm toughing it out this year for the kids. And when I'm standing out in the cold, snow, and wind, I keep in the back of my penny pinching, frugal, and maybe cheap mind, this isn't costing me anything. It's basically free entertainment!

So get out there this winter and go Sledding!

Fun Things To Do In The Winter

Here's some ideas for fun things to do in winter with little or no money. If you have kids and are sick of sitting in the house all winter, but don't have a lot of money, here's some fun things to do to get out of the house without really spending any money:

Go sledding! If you live where there's a lot of snow (like here in NH) take the kids sledding! My kids love it. It's fun, gets them outdoors and it's free!

Go for a walk in the woods! Get your boots on, warm coat, hats and mittens and take a hike! Enjoy nature in wintertime! Who knows what interesting things you'll see. Once again it's fun, good exercise, and free!

Go snowshoeing! Depending if you have snow shoes. It will cost you to buy them, obviously, but we happened to get them from Grammy for Christmas. But once you own them it's a fun thing to do with the kids. The kids love trekking through the snow in fields, hiking trails or wherever you want! Some places with hiking trails even rent snow shoes for a small fee. Check in your area!

And if it's just to cold or the weather doesn't permit getting out for the day. Think of fun things to do inside. One thing my kids like doing is "Dinner and a Movie." As a special treat, if we've been stuck inside all day, we'll pop in a DVD and instead of the usual meal at the dinner table, they get to eat in front of the TV while watching a movie! It doesn't sound like much, but the kids think it's fun!

The important thing is to not let winter (or money) stop you from having fun with your family!
